Métis Finger Weaving:

Weaving Story, Colour, and Patience into Practice

* Sorry, for members only

This hands-on workshop invites art educators to engage with the traditional Métis art of finger weaving as both a cultural practice and a pedagogical tool. Rooted in the First Peoples Principles of Learning—particularly “Learning takes patience and time”—this session emphasizes slow, intentional learning through the act of weaving.

Participants will learn the foundational technique of Métis Finger Weaving while exploring the historical and cultural significance of the Métis sash, including the meanings held within the colours and patterns. This workshop supports educators in integrating weaving and textile arts into their classrooms in a way that honours Indigenous knowledge systems, offering practical strategies for adapting the activity for learners from Kindergarten through Grade 12.

Educators will leave with an understanding of how finger weaving can support cross-curricular learning, foster mindfulness, and offer opportunities for storytelling and reflection through art.
