Shifting Perspectives 2024

at University of British Columbia, Vancouver, BC

2 streams of registration offerings – online and in person – sadly you will have to choose:
  • Keynote Speaker: Carey Newman will be streaming live, so in person and online participants will be able to learn from Indigenous artist, master carver, film maker, author and mentor!
  • Friday Online registrants will be able to zoom in for two afternoon sessions on Friday with two options for each session. Topics include:
    • Enhancing Classroom Learning with Filmmaking
    • Artist talk: Photography, pedagogy and exhibition practices
    • Stolen Words to Reclaiming Our Voice: Graphite Self-Portrait with Mixed Media
    • Uncovering Zines: Zines for Education
  • Friday In Person registrants will be able to choose from several sessions on Friday over the two afternoon sessions and 4 hands on workshops for the Saturday morning session. Here are some of the workshop titles you can expect to choose from on Friday (full descriptions will be posted on our website in the coming days):
    • Breakout session with Carey Newman: The Witness Blanket
    • AI for Art Teachers
    • A Generative Encounter with Clay
    • Thinking With contemporary Artists with Elementary Students
    • Alternative pathways: The Low-Residency MFA
    • Accessibility and Art
    • Arts for the Environment!
    • Celebration of the Salmon: exploring the salmon in Indigenous communities while creating a driftwood mobile
    • Research & Ideas<
    • Fotonovela: A Collaborative Comic Book Creation
    • Stolen Words to Reclaiming Our Voice: Graphite Self-Portrait with Mixed Media
    • Seriously playing Together: Using Play-Based Relational Art to Support Consent Education
    • Palimpsest: Working Into, Over and Through
  • Saturday In Person hands on workshops include:
    • Sculpture Walk – Discovering Modernist and Indigenous art presence on UBC campus
    • Uncovering Zines: Zines for Education 
    • Exploring printmaking techniques, strategies and imagery using gelli plates
    • Leftovers: Ideas for Reusing Old Projects and Left Over Paint in the Classroom
