PERCEPTION/S Journal

Call for Articles & Artistic Submissions

perceptions-logo

After a hiatus, the journal of the BC Art Teachers’ Association is returning! We will bring back the project ideas, and the reflections on relevant art education in our complex times. We aim to continue being a publication that supports art teachers, the creativity of our students, and be a meeting space that works in view of promoting sustainability, diversity and challenging the colonial narratives in art education.

Our journal will be under a new name: PERCEPTION/S. This change in the journal’s identity is to remember, recognize, and reconnect with our roots since the first issue of the BCATA journal was published under the name Perception in 1960.

Perception; to perceive, is a thought, belief, or opinion held based on appearances, it is about the way we feel about something. Perception is also defined as an awareness of things through the senses, especially sight. We felt that our original title Perception needed to be expanded and nuanced to invite us into two-eyed seeing, considering diverse perspectives and ways of knowing. And thus, Perception/s in plural form and with the slash, is to acknowledge interrelations and multiplicity in the conversations.

This call is an invitation for you to participate in the upcoming issue 63.1 of Perception/s. Journal of the BC Art Teachers’ Association. We are interested in essays or short pieces about:

  • Your experiences with the BCATA attending conferences, meetings, professional developments and fun events;
  • Narratives of art education in British Columbia – exploring the movement of ideas, enacting equity and diversity, sustainability and place, and decentering the traditional disciplinary focus in art education;
  • Indigenizing and decolonizing our practices in art education;
  • Exploring where are we coming from and where do we need to go as art educators in BC?
  • Big ideas for culturally/personally relevant artistic explorations and stimulating encounters in art education at elementary and secondary levels;
  • Share a poem, narrative prose or artwork(s).

Guidelines for Submissions:
